Surfing is probably the ultimate artistic expression: total physical, mental, and spiritual involvement in a single brushstroke of time and space. It begs the question: why attempt to encapsulate it within the static structure of art? A bit like advertising for a religion; if it’s that great, it shouldn’t need anything more. One response would be that, like meditation, it often occurs in a dream like consciousness, with a frustratingly evanescent fragility to the memories it leaves in its wake, thus a picture can aid to reawaken and savor the moment passed. The attempt to place a palpable form on the inherently liquid nature of the experience stirs the spirit via the physical comprehension of space. Also, as surfing frequently requires fear to be set aside, the image can serve to feed the passion, the “stoke”, needed to overcome that hesitation, as well as being the nexus for a shared recognition by those who know and intrigue for those as yet unfamiliar.
